Season One follows the Bartlett-Fleming family, Grandpa Jack, teenager Amy and older sister Lou, as they deal with the ups and downs of running a ranch that's been in the family for generations but is now so deep in debt they're one back payment away from losing it all. After the death of their mother, the girls' lives change forever. Lou returns home from her high-powered job in New York to take over the business of the ranch. Amy realises she has inherited her mother's special horse whispering gift and is determined to keep her mother's dream alive by maintaining Heartland as a horse rescue centre. And Jack just wants to prevent the two girls from killing each other. Thrown into this mix is Ty, the hunky new stable boy; Mallory, the 12-year-old kid next door who never goes home; Scott, the local vet who had a thing for Lou back in high school; and Tim, the girls' estranged father, who has returned to Hudson and wants to reconnect with his family but doesn't know how.

Season Three follows Amy continuing to work with traumatised and neglected horses but things get complicated when she suddenly finds herself thrust into the limelight of unwanted fame. Amy and Ty are finally together as a couple as Ty pursues his interest in veterinary medicine working alongside Scott. Lou has to make some difficult decisions about her future. As her relationship with Peter Morris becomes more and more serious she feels pulled between two different worlds. As for Jack, his granddaughters are growing up, Lisa wants to take their relationship to the next level and like it or not, Time is a permanent part of the family.

Season Four sees Amy Fleming continuing to work to heal and retrain neglected and abused horses. Special projects for Amy include training a racehorse to jump, saving abandoned horses, and keeping her relationship with Ty Borden, a once troubled teen, together. Lou, Amy’s sister, struggles to live two lives, one in Dubai, and one at Heartland, which takes a toll on her marriage. Jack and Tim, Amy’s grandfather and father, quarrel with their usual frequency, and the neighbour who never seems to leave, Mallory Wells, continues to get herself into sticky situations.

Season Five of Heartland finds Amy reaching a new level of horsemanship that sets her down a freeing path.
